Bandwidth management on SonicWall devices is designed to manage traffic that passes out to the internet. VoIP phones require a very stable internet connection to maintain call quality and service. The steps outlined below will assist you in enabling this feature.

Enable BWM for your SonicWall device

Log in to the web interface of your SonicWall device.

  1. Click on the Object tab at the top of the page
  2. Under Profile Objects click on the Bandwidth option
  3. Create a new Bandwidth Object named “Weave Phones Egress” and give it guaranteed and maxim bandwidth values. A good rule of thumb is to dedicate 200 kbps per phone you have on-site. If you had 10 phones on-site we’d recommend no less than 2 Mbps of dedicated bandwidth. You can then decide how much maximum bandwidth you will allow the phones to use.
  4. Select “2 High” for Traffic Priority
  5. You will want to create 2 total objects. One for Weave Phone Egress as we did above and one for Weave Phones Ingress (Download & Upload)
  6. Click Save to create the Bandwidth Object

Enable BWM on the WAN Interface

  1. To setup BWM properly, you will need to know your current internet speeds. If you do not already know your speeds, you can obtain that information by contacting your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or you can perform your own speed test by visiting or by entering Speed Test into a google search bar
  2. You will need to convert your network speeds to Kbps. ie 10Mbps = 10000Kbps
  3. Once you have your upload and download speeds converted to Kbps, log in to your SonicWall device and click Network at the top of the page
  4. Click on the Interfaces option on the left side
  5. Locate the WAN interface (usually X1) and click the Configure button for that interface. A new window will pop up
  6. Ensure that the Enable Egress Bandwidth Management and Enable Ingress Bandwidth Management buttons are checked
  7. Enter your UPLOAD speed in Kbps into the EGRESS field
  8. Enter your DOWNLOAD speed in Kbps into the INGRESS field
  9. Click OK

Enable BWM on the Weave Firewall Policy

If you do not already have an outbound firewall policy for Weave traffic, please see Required Configuration for SonicWALL for directions on setting that policy up.

Log in to the web interface of your SonicWall device.

  1. Click on Policy at the top of the page
  2. Identify the Weave outbound firewall policy and click edit
  3. Click on the Traffic Shaping tab
  4. Click the dropdown box for Egress BWM and select your Weave Phones Egress object that you created
  5. Click the dropdown box for Ingress BWM and select your Weave Phones Ingress object that you created
  6. Click Save

You should now notice a BWM icon on the firewall policy under the comment column.
